What Really Happens at a Family Photo Shoot?

Will the kids behave? What should we wear? Will we look awkward? And will the photographs be worth the money?
After more than 30 years photographing Perth families, I've heard just about every concern. Here's what you can expect.

Don't worry about the kids

Children don't always cooperate. Teenagers sometimes wish they were somewhere else. And getting everyone dressed and out of the house can be an achievement in itself.

I've seen it all.

I don't expect perfect behaviour or smiles on command. We'll walk, talk, have a bit of fun and let the children be themselves.

Some of my best photographs happen when nobody's thinking about the camera.

What should we wear?

Keep it simple. Clothes that look good together, without everyone having to match.

Comfort matters, particularly with children. I'll happily offer advice beforehand, so there's one less thing to worry about.

What happens during the shoot?

I'll take care of that.

You don't need to know how to pose or where to stand. I'll guide you through family groups, parents together, children on their own and whatever else works.

Sometimes I'll give quite specific direction. Other times I'll stand back and let things happen.

And if Dad doesn't particularly enjoy being photographed, he won't be the first!

My job is to make everyone look good without making the whole experience feel like hard work.

What happens afterwards?

This is where my experience really comes into play.

I carefully select and edit the photographs before inviting you to see them. We'll look through the results together and work out which ones you'd most enjoy having in your home.

I particularly love creating large, beautifully finished framed portraits. Photographs that become part of your everyday surroundings rather than sitting unseen on a computer.

There's no obligation to buy everything you see. We'll discuss the options and prices so you can decide what suits you.

Is professional family photography worth the cost?

That's something only you can decide.

There are plenty of photographers offering inexpensive sessions and digital files. My approach is different. I spend considerable time on the photography, editing and finished presentation.

I want you to be delighted with the results, not simply satisfied that you've had some photographs taken.

And I want you to be comfortable with the costs before making any decisions.

One thing I've learned

I've photographed families who have returned after 10, 20 and even 30 years.

Seeing those earlier photographs alongside the families as they are today is quite something. The children have grown, the parents have changed, and sometimes there are grandchildren in the picture.

It's a reminder of why I still enjoy doing this work.

You don't need a perfectly behaved family or a perfect day.

Just come along. I'll look after the photography.
